emptyOEBEL

empty Did you know that Goebel is the maker of the famous and extremely popular Hummel figurines?! Surprise, surprise!! This company began all the way back in 1871 as the W. Goebel Porzellanfabrik. The founder, F.W. Goebel, opened a pottery in the town of Oeslau in what is now West Germany, but then was Oeslau, Bavaria. Goebel made lovely figurines from the start but only became really well-known after they began making Hummel figurines in 1935.

Thankfully for model horse collectors, Goebel continued to make its animal figurines. They can be found in gift shops and department stores, and of course at antique shows and sometimes at flea markets and garage sales.

As well as marketing Hummels, Goebel also has another line, called Harvey Knox, which is happily represented in this gallery! (Information for this write up was obtained from the book, Animal Figurines, by Mike Schneider.)

From a letter to the Goebel Collector's club: Goebel no longer produces horses. Donald Brindley sculpted a number of pieces produced including: Appaloosa, Arabian, Tennessee Walking Horse, Hackney, Hanoverian, English Thoroughbred, American Quarter Horse and the Shire. Other pieces produced included single (running) horse, mare and foal, large horse rearing, double horses running, foals, horses standing and parading. Thanks to Melodie Dowell for providing this information.
